About the show:
Canaan tells the coming-of-age story of a teenager and his community, caught between love, activism, and spirituality during one of the most tumultuous years in American history – 1968. In Canaan, generations collide as Washington, D.C. neighbors must decide where their loyalties lie when the Civil Rights Movement takes a downward turn following the death of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.
Written by Micah Ariel Watson, an award-winning filmmaker, playwright, and screenwriter, from Wichita, has a gift for bringing powerful stories to life, on stage, and on screen. Watson's work centers the blurred lines between the sacred and secular in Black culture, often employing poetry and hip-hop to do so.
Sheila Kinnard, a noted performer in numerous productions, will be making her professional directorial debut. Ms. Kinnard brings to Canaan her decades of experience in the Wichita educational system, as a drama instructor, and her countless roles as a Thespian in the theatrical community.
“Having lived through the 60s, it’s important that we never forget these years of struggle and progress. I am excited to bring to the a fresh look at the other issues that plagued our country then and continues to persist today”. -- Sheila Kinnard
